What Is the Significance of CNY Day 15?
As we prepare to end the Chinese New Year with a bang, how many of us actually know the real meaning behind the 15th day of the Chinese New Year? Yes, it may seem like an appropriate time to gather our loved ones for the last celebration before we all settle into reality and wait for the next public holiday, but the 15th day of Chinese New Year has deeper meanings that should be kept in mind as well.
The 15th day of Chinese New Year is the first night of the full moon, and sometimes also known as Lantern Festival Day. On this day, lanterns are commonly displayed around town as children carry them to the temples for prayer.
Tangyuan are also consumed as a tradition to symbolize reunion as they are roughly translated to ‘round dumplings in soup’ so don’t be alarmed when your elders prepare some delicious tangyuan for you because they can be appreciated on this day as well!
In Taoism, people believe that the 15th day is the birthday of Tian Guan, the Taoist Ruler of Heaven. To please him and gain blessings, people normally prepare various kinds of activities and entertainment as it is believed that he enjoys such activities.
However, this holiday is more commonly associated with guiding the lost and evil spirits home while celebrating good relations with families, nature, people, and deities as they are believed to be responsible for blessings for the rest of the year. That is why the 15th day of Chinese New Year is also a day where families come together for a second reunion dinner, with lanterns and oranges as a large part of the celebration.
